Irrigation Startup vs Tune-Up

5 min read

Homeowners often use the terms interchangeably, but an irrigation startup and an irrigation tune-up are two distinct services with different goals. Understanding the difference helps you know what your system actually needs and when.

What Is a Spring Startup?

A spring startup is the process of safely bringing your irrigation system out of winter dormancy. If your system was properly winterized (blown out) in the fall, every pipe, valve, and head is empty and depressurized. Startup reverses that process carefully.

Here is what a professional startup includes:

  • Main water supply activation — The main shutoff valve is opened slowly to pressurize the system gradually. Rushing this step causes pressure surges that crack pipes and blow seals.
  • Backflow preventer inspection — The backflow device is checked for leaks, proper valve operation, and freeze damage. Many municipalities in Minnesota require annual backflow testing.
  • Zone-by-zone activation — Each zone is run individually to verify it operates. The technician walks the zone looking for obvious issues.
  • Basic head check — Heads are inspected for visible damage, and any that are clearly broken or stuck are noted.
  • Controller power-up — The controller is turned on and a basic schedule is set for early-season watering.

The goal of a startup is to get the system operational and identify any damage from winter. It is a focused, efficient service typically completed in 30 to 45 minutes for a standard residential system.

What Is an Irrigation Tune-Up?

A tune-up is a more comprehensive service that optimizes your entire system for peak performance. Think of it as the difference between starting your car after winter storage versus getting a full service at the shop.

A tune-up includes everything in a startup, plus:

  • Head-by-head adjustment — Every head is individually checked for arc, radius, and spray pattern. Heads that have shifted, tilted, or sunk are corrected.
  • Nozzle inspection and cleaning — Clogged nozzles are cleaned or replaced. Worn nozzles that mist instead of spray are swapped out.
  • Coverage analysis — The technician verifies head-to-head coverage on every zone, identifying gaps where turf is not receiving adequate water.
  • Pressure check — System pressure is measured to ensure it falls within the optimal range for your head type. High pressure causes misting and waste. Low pressure causes poor coverage.
  • Controller programming — Run times, start times, and seasonal adjustments are configured based on your specific zones, soil type, and plant material.
  • Valve inspection — Valves are checked for leaks, slow closure, and proper operation.
  • Rain sensor test — If equipped, the rain sensor is tested to confirm it will actually skip cycles during rainfall.

A thorough tune-up takes 60 to 90 minutes for a standard residential system and may take longer for larger properties or systems with many zones.

When Do You Need Which?

Here is a simple framework:

Every spring: Startup (minimum). Every system that was winterized needs a startup. Period. Skipping startup and just turning the water on yourself risks damage that costs far more than the service fee.

Every 1 to 2 years: Tune-up. If your system runs well, a tune-up every other year keeps it optimized. Systems older than 10 years or properties where you have noticed coverage problems benefit from annual tune-ups.

Immediately if you notice problems. Dry spots, high water bills, leaking heads, or zones that will not run all warrant a service call that may include tune-up level work on the affected areas.

Can You Combine Them?

Absolutely. Many homeowners in Owatonna and Faribault schedule a combined startup and tune-up each spring. This gets the system running and fully optimized in a single visit. It is more efficient for you and for us, and the combined cost is typically less than scheduling them separately.

What Does Each Service Cost?

For a standard residential irrigation system in southern Minnesota:

  • Spring startup only: $75 to $125
  • Full tune-up (including startup): $150 to $250
  • Repairs (head replacement, valve repair, leak fix) are additional and quoted on site based on parts and labor needed

These ranges cover most residential systems with 4 to 8 zones. Larger systems or properties with specialized equipment (drip zones, smart controllers, booster pumps) may be higher.

What About DIY?

We understand the appeal of saving money by doing it yourself. If you are going to attempt a startup on your own, at minimum:

  • Open the main valve very slowly — a quarter turn at a time, waiting 30 seconds between turns
  • Run each zone individually and walk the entire area looking for leaks
  • Check that every head pops up, sprays correctly, and retracts
  • Verify your backflow preventer is not leaking

That said, most homeowners lack the tools and experience to properly adjust heads, diagnose pressure issues, or identify developing problems. The cost of a professional startup is modest compared to the repairs that DIY mistakes can cause.

Pair Your Irrigation Service with Lawn Care

Your irrigation system and your lawn care program work together. Freshly aerated soil absorbs irrigation water more efficiently. Proper watering activates fertilizer applications. A well-designed landscape groups plants with similar water needs on the same zones.

Working with one company that manages both your irrigation and lawn care means everything is coordinated for the best results.
