5 Signs Your Trees Need Attention

4 min read

Trees provide shade, curb appeal, and property value — but they also require attention. Ignoring warning signs can lead to property damage, safety hazards, and the loss of trees that might have been saved with timely care.

Here are five signs it is time to call a professional for your Owatonna area property.

Sign 1: Dead or Hanging Branches

Dead wood is brittle and unpredictable. It can fall without warning during storms, high winds, or under the weight of snow and ice. Minnesota ice storms are particularly dangerous for trees with dead branches.

What to look for:

  • Branches with no leaves during the growing season
  • Peeling or missing bark on limbs
  • Dry, brittle branches
  • Hanging branches ("widow-makers") — partially broken limbs caught in the canopy

If large dead branches overhang your home, driveway, or walkway, do not wait. This is a safety issue.

Sign 2: Visible Disease or Pest Damage

Trees in southern Minnesota face several active threats: Dutch elm disease, oak wilt, apple scab, and emerald ash borer. Early detection and treatment can sometimes save a tree that would otherwise be lost.

Warning signs:

  • Unusual leaf discoloration or early leaf drop
  • Cankers or sunken areas on bark
  • Fungal growth on the trunk or base
  • Oozing sap or sawdust-like material on bark
  • D-shaped exit holes (~1/8 inch) on ash trees — emerald ash borer

For emerald ash borer, trunk-injection treatment is the only effective option. Once canopy loss exceeds 50%, the tree typically cannot be saved.

Sign 3: Leaning or Structural Problems

A tree that has always grown at a slight angle is usually fine. But a tree that has recently started leaning, especially after a storm, may have root damage. This is a serious safety concern.

Other structural red flags:

  • Trunk splitting into large stems with a narrow V-shaped crotch
  • Visible cracks in the trunk or major branches
  • Roots that appear damaged, heaving, or exposed on one side

A certified arborist can assess whether the tree can be cabled and braced or whether removal is safer.

Sign 4: Overgrown Canopy Affecting Your Property

Trees that have not been pruned regularly cause problems:

  • Dense canopies block sunlight from your lawn
  • Branches rubbing against your roof, siding, or gutters cause damage over time
  • Limbs over power lines create safety hazards and may violate ordinances
  • Increased wind resistance makes the tree more susceptible to storm damage

In Owatonna, the city has guidelines regarding trees that interfere with public sidewalks, streets, and utility lines. If your trees encroach on public areas, you may be required to have them trimmed.

Sign 5: Root Issues and Soil Changes

Root problems are harder to spot, but there are visible indicators:

  • Mushrooms or fungal growth at the base — often indicates root rot
  • Soil heaving or cracking near the trunk — signals root instability
  • Recent construction, grading, or trenching near the tree
  • Girdling roots — trunk enters ground without visible flare at the base

Why You Should Not Wait

Waiting until a storm forces the issue usually means emergency rates, property damage, and fewer options.

A scheduled assessment lets you address problems on your terms — at standard rates, with proper planning, and without the pressure of a tree leaning against your roof.
